In her work, photographer Martina Hoogland Ivanow makes use of dark, fascinating aesthetics and a distinctive way of dealing shadows and light, lending it an unfathomable quality. The muted tones that characterise her images become a sort of filter between their subjects and the viewer, raising questions concerning the “outside” and being an outsider. Presented in a single cardboard sleeve are her series ‘Satellite’ (2009–2010) and the more recent ‘Circular Wait’. In the latter, the Hoogland Ivanow explores the relationship between man and nature, one that oscillates between control and a lack thereof. Includes an essay and interview with the photographer.
